Medicine that sees the whole person.
Board certified in emergency medicine with twenty years of clinical experience, now practicing functional medicine, health optimization, and longevity. Because treating the whole person matters more than treating the chart.
Dr. Egan grew up with a pull toward the physical. From adolescence, the gym was his laboratory. He competed, coached himself, and studied what the human body was capable of. That curiosity never left him. It has been the quiet constant through everything that followed.
He went to medical school at the University of Massachusetts, completed his residency in emergency medicine at UMass Memorial, and spent the next two decades in the ER. That environment teaches things no textbook can: that medicine is not abstract, that the body's signals matter, and that the gap between thriving and crisis can be surprisingly small.
The shift toward functional medicine was not a career pivot. It was a reckoning. Nine years ago, his wife Yvonne was diagnosed with lung cancer. What followed was a battle, and a victory. But it was also an education in how much the medical system does well, and how much it overlooks. The questions it raised, about root causes, total-body health, and thriving rather than just surviving, sent him in a different direction.
He began studying and practicing formally in these areas six years ago, under the mentorship of Dr. Kyle Gillett, and continues that work through Gillett Health. What he brings to it is rare: two decades of real emergency medicine, alongside the patience and thoroughness of someone who has learned to ask different questions.
The emergency room trains you to move fast and miss nothing. Functional medicine trains you to slow down and look deeper. Dr. Egan does both. He brings to every consultation the clinical instincts of someone who spent twenty years in the rooms where it really matters, alongside the longer view of someone asking what health actually looks like over time.
He is as interested in how someone is thriving as in how they are suffering. He takes your concerns seriously, because he has seen, many times, what happens when they go unaddressed.
Health is not a collection of isolated symptoms. Dr. Egan looks at the complete picture: hormones, metabolism, lifestyle, and history, to understand what is actually going on.
The absence of disease is not the same as being well. He works with patients who want to perform better, age more gracefully, and build health that lasts.
If something feels wrong, it deserves a real answer. Not a reassurance, not a referral to a waiting list. An answer.
Dr. Egan and Yvonne have four kids, ranging from 27 to 13, which means the house is rarely quiet and never boring. He grew up in the city, but some years ago he bought an abandoned farm and has been slowly, stubbornly bringing it back to life. The land requires patience. He has found he likes that.
The gym has always been the constant. He trains, he lifts, he coaches. His current favorite project is Yvonne, who in her 50s has taken up amateur bodybuilding and is very good at it. He approaches her training with the same seriousness and affection he brings to his practice: lots of data, genuine enthusiasm, and a complete refusal to let her get away with half measures.
Two large, wolfy dogs complete the picture. They believe the farm belongs to them. They are probably right.
